India is celebrating its 79th Independence Day today, August 15, 2025, marking the historic moment of freedom from British colonial rule in 1947. The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Naya Bharat,” reflecting India’s vision of becoming a prosperous, self-reliant nation by 2047. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the festivities by hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi at around 7:30 AM, followed by his 12th consecutive Independence Day address. The ceremony will include a Guard of Honour, a 21-gun salute, and a shower of flower petals by Indian Air Force helicopters. Approximately 5,000 special guests, including sanitation workers, Kho-Kho players, and tribal children from Andaman & Nicobar, will attend the event.
President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation on August 14, condemning the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and praising Operation Sindoor, a precision strike by the Indian armed forces against terrorist infrastructure, which will feature prominently in today’s celebrations. Security has been tightened in Delhi, with over 11,000 personnel and 3,000 traffic police deployed around the Red Fort, along with traffic restrictions from 4:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
The day is a national holiday, with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural programs across the country. It honors the sacrifices of freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Subhas Chandra Bose, whose words continue to inspire patriotism.
